National recognition as demonstrated through involvement in academic/professional societies at a national level. Demonstrated increasing levels of leadership or administrative positions in medical school or academic medical center setting. Proven record of recruitment and retention of faculty and mentorship.

Reporting to the Dean of the UK College of Medicine, Robert S. DiPaola, MD, the chair serves as the chief academic and administrative officer for the department. The successful candidate will demonstrate broad progressive administrative leadership experience in an integrated academic medical center environment; and possess national recognition for achievement in research, educational and clinical pursuits that would warrant appointment as a full professor. Candidates should also have a proven track record of collaboration and program building.

Required License/Registration/Certification

Board certification required in Neurosurgery and/or appropriate subspecialty.

Eligible for, or in current possession of, a medical licensure in Kentucky.

Job Summary

The University of Kentucky College of Medicine invites applications for the position of chair of the Department of Neurosurgery. The College of Medicine seeks a visionary Chair with a successful record of achievement in academic neurosurgical medicine. Prior extensive administrative experience as a department chair, division chief or program director is preferred. The successful candidate should demonstrate strong leadership skills as a listener, decision-maker, humanist, collaborator, and be able to be an effective advocate for the Department and its faculty. Exceptional accomplishments as a surgeon and academician are required as the Chair’s duties include clinical practice.

The predominant criteria for appointment as Chair includes the proven ability to deliver excellent patient care while having scholarly productivity and evidence of success in training future leaders in Neurosurgery.

The candidate should also have experience developing and/or participating in collaborative initiatives and the personal qualities to promote, foster, and facilitate the trust of colleagues and the broader university. The successful applicant should demonstrate impeccable integrity and be an effective and able communicator.

The Department of Neurosurgery currently consists of 9 clinical faculty (1 additional signed for next year), 6 research faculty, 5 advance practice providers and over 18 staff members not including ambulatory clinical staff. The department manages a 7-year Neurosurgery residency program (2 residents per year, 14 residents total), as well as fellowship programs in Vascular Neurosurgery (starting in 2021).
